SWsoft to rebrand as Parallels
By Miya Knights,
SWsoft, the virtualisation and automation software maker has announced plans to rebrand itself, adopting "Parallels" as its new corporate name.
Parallels is the company's existing virtual machine software product that allows users to run multiple operating systems (OS) on a Mac computer.
Serguei Beloussov, SWsoft chief executive told IT PRO that the re-branding exercise, to be complete in early 2008, is the first in a series of moves that will help its customers and partners realise the benefits of what it is calling 'Optimised Computing'.
"This means enhancing Windows, Linux, Mac, x86 and ia64-based bare metal systems with hypervisor-based virtualisation, container-based virtualisation and a suite of complementary automation solutions."
New products expected in 2008 include a server-based hypervisor later in 2008, and major updates to Parallels Desktop and Parallels Workstation.
The company will also introduce new virtualisation management software that will manage its Virtuozzo and Parallels products, as well as third-party virtualisation technologies in a single platform. SWsoft today also unveiled the first release candidate of its container-based, OS virtualisation software, Virtuozzo 4.
Beloussov added that the company wanted remain platform independent, in contrast to the trend he claimed was characterising the strategies of others in the market, including VMware, Citrix with its Xen acquisition, Microsoft and most recently, Oracle.
"A very important part of our strategy is about being heterogeneous," he said. "We'll ship our own hypervisor products, but will also support Microsoft's and VMware's, for example."
