The Land Reg joins EU security group
By Miya Knights,
Government agency The Land Registry has joined Europe's leading electronic identity security forum.
The move to join the Independent European e-Identity & Security Association eema comes after the successful completion of work to implement a new Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) security platform in support of growing the Registry's electronically delivered services and continued programme of computerisation.
As the largest managed property register in the world, the agency holds computerised information on over 20 million properties and over the last 12 months, it has implemented a PKI security platform serving its external customers.
Joining eema will give it access to a forum for regular dialogue between the 160-strong membership to identify best practices and raise industry awareness in the IT security and electronic identity fields.
Pete Ireland Senior, development group manager for e-conveyancing at Land Registry, said: "As new users of PKI technology, being able to discuss industry trends with those closely involved in the security world will enable Land Registry to make a smooth transition into the new security environment and deliver the most up-to-date and appropriate solutions to citizens."
The property registry will join other companies, including Unilever, Volvo, Shell and KPMG, in sharing experiences, debating business impact and discussing key issues at both local and European levels in areas including PKI, its application and underlying security.
Ireland added that digital signing of documents would be of key interest to the Registry: "The implementation of electronic signatures to enable citizens to sign e-documents relating to property transactions is an important area for us, alongside the issues of identity management, cryptographic tokens, second factor authentication and role-based access."
Executive director of eema, Roger Dean added: "We are looking forward to including Land Registry in eema's plans for 2008, including our annual ISSE [Information Security Solutions Europe] conference in October and the European e-ID Card Conference in the spring."
