Quantum launches half-size LTO-4 tape drive
By Nicole Kobie,
Quantum has released a new LTO-4 half-height tape drive which offers the same performance as a full-height drive.
By offering 800GB of native capacity and transfer rates of up to 432GB/hr, the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Half Height (HH) tape drive doubles the capacity and rates of the previous generation LTO drive, but in a space saving form, the firm said.
Kevin Koski, product manager of server storage at Quantum reseller Equus, said: "Customers not only achieve the highest in LTO-4 performance but also are able to realise the benefits associated with the smaller format taking up less data centre space."
The LTO-4 HH can also be switched to Green Mode, which cuts energy use by shutting off power to components inside the drive when it's idle or on standby. Quantum also claimed that it's FastSense variable speed feature finishes transferring data for backups more quickly, but using less power, than other LTO-4 drives.
On the security front, the Quantum LTO-4 HH comes with AES 256-bit native encryption as well as SmartVerify, which checks all data being written to the tape.
The LTO-4 HH integrates with the latest industry standard interface, serial attached SCSI, but also has compatibility to read-and-write to LTO-3 devices and to read LTO-2.
Quantum's LTO-4 HH drive includes Symantec Backup Exec QuickStart and is available in internal, tabletop and 1U rackmount configurations, with pricing beginning at $3,849 (£1,951).
