easyJet upgrades network to cope with demand
By Miya Knights,
A project to upgrade budget airline easyJet's network infrastructure has been completed in time for the New Year rush to book time away this year.
The airline needed to upgrade its communications infrastructure and increase its capacity to handle an anticipated 60-per-cent increase in traffic over its voice, data and internet channels during its busiest trading period of year.
Bill Codd, easyJet IT manager said: "The start of the year is always one of the busiest times for us. People like to book a trip to get away and banish the January blues and we see a massive increase in sales."
It contracted NTL Telewest Business to deploy 300 Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) lines and create a single communications environment for its headquarters and three sites at Luton Airport.
The airline said the convergence of voice and data over the managed ISDN connections offered a resilient, integrated way to manage the peaks in customer demand. And the upgraded network also provides the company with a cost-effective way for it to connect workgroups at its different locations.
Codd added: "Approximately 98 per cent of all our sales come via our website, so it's vital that we have the right communications infrastructure in place to be able to meet demand.
