Vista service pack set for imminent release

Microsoft confirms the long-awaited update for its latest desktop operating system has been passed to PC makers, signalling a public release soon.

By Chris Green, 5 Feb 2008 at 08:40

Users and businesses that have held off on deploying Windows Vista until the first service pack drops will soon be in a position to deploy the operating system, after Microsoft confirmed that it has released Service Pack 1 (SP1) to manufacturing.

In a presentation to investors, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer announced the company had also released to manufacturing the first major upgrade to its operating system for server computers, Windows Server 2008.

By releasing to manufacturers, Microsoft has given PC and server makers advanced access to the code, so that they can ready machines with updated versions of the respective operating systems to coincide with the public release. It also gives time for Microsoft to produce updated versions and press DVDs of both Windows versions with SP1 already integrated, which will replace existing retail and bundled products on store shelves.
