    Apple releases 16GB iPhone

Long rumoured upgrade to the iPod-based smartphone is quietly released, causing great surprise in the industry.

By Benny Har-Even, 5 Feb 2008 at 15:42

Apple has announced an updated version of the iPhone with double the storage, taking capacity to 16GB.

This is available right now in all UK Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores for a fairly hefty £329 including VAT. The existing 8GB model continues to be available at an unchanged £269. In addition, Apple has upped the storage on the iPod Touch to 32GB, also available at £329 including VAT, joining the current 16GB and 8GB models.

"For some users, there's never enough memory," commented Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing. With no hint of the 16GB iPhone at last month's Macworld, the announcement has come as something of a surprise and may disappoint customers who have recently picked one up, though the £100 premium over the 16GB model may soften the blow.

In combination with O2's recently rejigged iPhone tariffs, Apple is no doubt hoping to improve on iPhone sales that so far have been below expectations.

The announcement is also timely as it precedes the release of the iPhone software development kit later this month, which will no doubt provide a flurry of applications that will make good use of the increased storage space.
