    HP unveils SMB disk arrays

Cost-effective array line will help small and medium-sized businesses jump on the virtualised storage bandwagon.

By Nicole Kobie, 6 Feb 2008 at 13:48

HP has announced a new array designed for small- and medium-sized businesses.

Dubbed the HP StorageWorks 2000 Modular Smart Array (MSA2000), it focuses on allowing flexibility, the company claims.

The modular arrays can scale up to 36 terabytes, using either 4Gb fibre channel or 1Gb iSCSI connectivity. They can be paired with 48 SAS or SATA drives, letting IT departments mix and match between price and performance.

HP added that the systems are enterprise-class but their ease of use, flexibility and lower costs make them ideal for SMBs, as well as remote offices and departmental storage.

"Customers will benefit from consolidating their storage and can take advantage of features like snap and clone to protect their data and deliver value to their business," said Robin Hensley, vice president of entry storage at HP's StorageWorks.

The arrays support VMware virtualisation software, or can be used in physical server environments.

The system will be available in March at an expected starting list price of €3,395 (£2,534).
