MWC 2008: T-Mobile to cut data roaming costs
By Nicole Kobie,
T-Mobile has responded to European Union calls for a cut in data roaming charges with a new out-of-country tariff scheme for data which is the same price across all 27 member states.
Last year, the European Union (EU) forced operators to cap their roaming call charges, but didn't take any action on data.
Yesterday, body called on networks to take action on data roaming charges.
Today, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, T-Mobile said it would be offering a pan-European uniform data charge of €2 (£1.49) per MB or €15 (£11.17) a day for a total volume of 50MB.
The uniform pricing is across any network, regardless of the operator. "You can go to any country on any network and get these prices," said T-Mobile International chief executive Hamid Akhavan.
The new pricing will be rolled out by market over the next year, with the majority of countries offering the rate by mid-2008.
