HMRC in £60 million Airwave deal

HM Revenue and Customs has signed on to get safety communications system for its criminal and detection teams.

By Nicole Kobie, 14 Feb 2008 at 10:22

Tax investigators and customs enforcers are set to get a new digital radio system, after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) signed a 15-year, £60 million contract with

Airwave.

The new communications system will boost coverage and provide a control room to handle 4,000 new connections for the Criminal Investigation and Detection teams. The encrypted network means voice and data carried is secure and can't be accessed by third parties.

Stephen Walton HMRC's Project Manager, commented: "Security was always going to be a major factor when it came to choosing our radio network. However, security was not the only criteria. We were also keen to have a network that could provide coverage across as wide an area as possible."

Airwave's network covers 99 per cent of Great Britain. Te Airwave system is used by other public organisations - including all police services in Britain, Wales and Scotland - allowing for easy communication between those enforcement and emergency agencies and the HMRC teams.
