Kaspersky warns of Valentine's day spam

It's 14 February, so that can only mean one thing - yes, 'spam is in the air'.

By Benny Har-Even, 14 Feb 2008 at 12:18

Warnings have emerged of large-scale global mass mailing of Valentine's Day spam.

Kaspersky Lab has identified a message that contains a link to an 'e-card', that when clicked on simultaneously downloads a malicious file.

This file has been identified by Kaspersky Lab as 'Packed.Win32.Tibs.ic.' The link in the message is displayed in the format 'http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', where xxx is a number.

"We expect the peak in Valentine's Day spam is still to come," says senior technology consultant at Kaspersky Lab, David Emm.

Sensibly, he advises those who receive a Valentine's Day e-card to think twice before opening any file. "An e-card may genuinely contain a message of love and affection, but there are those who use such occasions to spread malicious programs."

The scale of the problem is large and the message currently accounts for about five per cent of all mail traffic checked by Kaspersky Hosted Security Services.

As ever, it makes sense to ensure you have an effective spam strategy in place.
