Vista service pack blocks security apps

Microsoft has issued an updated list of applications that are blocked or that lose functionality after installation of its first service pack for its Vista operating system.

Just a few weeks before the full public release of the first service pack (SP1) for its Vista operating system (OS), Microsoft has updated the list of applications affected after its installation, including some security software, adding to the list it first published last week.

The vendor has recommended users update their Vista-compatible versions of a number of applications it said may be blocked or that are "known to experience a loss of functionality" on a PC running Vista SP1 on its support site.

The affected applications include the internet security and firewall products, BitDefender AV and BitDefender Internet Security, version 10; Trend Micro Internet Security 2008; Zone Alarm Security Suite, version 7.1.078; Jiangmin KV Antivirus, versions 10 and 2008; and Rising Personal Firewall 2007.

Other programmes affected were the New York Times e-reader, Iron Speed Designer version 5.0.1 and Novell's ZENworks configuration management (ZCM) agent.

It is not unusual for lists like to this to be compiled when a new OS is released. Independent software developers compiled similar lists when Apple released its last Mac OS X 10.5 version. And Microsoft did the same in 2005, when it released the second service pack update for Windows XP.

And recent testing by independent software testers found the service pack did not increase application compatibility when applied to existing Vista-based enterprise IT environments.

Vista SP1 was released to manufacture (RTM) two weeks ago. At the time Microsoft said it would be publicly available to download in mid-March, before being issued as an automatic update sometime in April.
