CeBIT: SanDisk offers automatic laptop backup
By Nicole Kobie,
An adaptor which fits into a memory card slot on computers is being touted as a continuous backup solution by SanDisk.
The firm, best known for its memory cards, announced the FlashBack Adapter at CeBIT this week. The device fits into the ExpressCard slot on computers and laptops, automatically backing up and encrypting data onto an SD flash memory card.
"This is a 'set it and forget it' solution for every laptop user with an ExpressCard slot who wants to be protected from unintended data loss," said Matthijs Hutten, SanDisk's senior product marketing manager for accessories. "We all know that we should frequently make backups of our critical files. But most of us don't get around to it because it seems like too much of an effort, or we simply forget to do it. This practical solution does the job and does it automatically."
The adapter requires a memory card to work. Together, the pair slip into the ExpressCard slot. Software - only for Windows at the moment - lets the user decide which files or folders to backup. Whenever a designated file is modified, the memory card is updated, removing the need for user intervention or scheduled backups, SanDisk claimed. Restoring lost data is as easy as transferring the files from the memory card to a new or fixed machine.
The firm also offers online backups, via BeInSync for a fee.
The FlashBack Adapter is available in the second quarter of this year, at a cost of $29.99 (£15), not including the required memory card.
