Super Aguri extends wireless for new season
By Miya Knights,
The Super Aguri F1 Team today announced it is taking on new wireless access point technology to extend communications links at races in time for the start of the new season.
The Japanese team will use the new access points to increase wireless network coverage to more of its corporate and outdoor areas at each track it visited during the season, starting this Sunday 14 March in Melbourne, Australia.
The decision to extend its networking capabilities and relationship with provider Proxim Wireless came after Super Aguri successfully used Proxim Tsunami QuickBridge wireless bridges between the team pits and server truck during last season.
The F1 Team has now extended its investment by appointing Proxim as the official wireless networking supplier and deploying its ORiNOCO AP-4000 access points in time for this year's competition.
Proxim ORiNOCO AP-4000 dual radio access points will be installed in the team's motor homes and hospitality areas, as well as in the pit garage and other external facilities. And they will be configured so all the indoor and outdoor access points will interconnect to provide seamless Wi-Fi network coverage across the wider area.
The vendor said AP-4000s offer mesh functionality ensuring a reliable, secure and easy-to-deploy wireless network, removing the need for leased lines and reducing associated costs.
Gavin Noble, Super Aguri F1 Team IT manager agreed there are clear cost saving benefits, adding that the team plans to grow its investment in wireless technology further this year.
"We're always looking for ways to reduce costs. By using a wireless network instead of leased lines at the race tracks offers us significant savings," he said. "The QuickBridge products were really successful last season and we're confident that the AP-4000 access points will be highly beneficial to the team during this season. We're also considering video monitoring and wireless voice over internet protocol (VoIP) for this season using Proxim Wireless technology."
