    Nationwide switches to SAP

Building society launches £300 million core banking update

By Stephen Pritchard, 17 Mar 2008 at 10:23

Nationwide - the UK's largest building society - will spend £300 million on updating its core savings and mortgage systems to the SAP platform.

Currently, the society runs banking applications from Unisys, with mainframe hardware from Fujitsu.

The SAP deal is part of a wider overhaul of core banking systems, codenamed Project Voyager. Sources close to the deal say that Nationwide has yet to pick a hardware platform for the new system.

However, SAP will be installing its Netweaver service oriented architecture (SOA) middleware as well as banking applications.

The deal represents a significant win for SAP, which has made winning contracts with tier one banks a key part of its financial services strategy.

Alongside Nationwide, SAP already counts Deutsche Postbank and Standard Bank of South Africa as customers.

"Banks are increasingly looking to standardise their core software platforms," said Julian Johnson, SAP's senior vice president for banking in EMEA. "This is a great opportunity to build on our capabilities and to lead consolidation in the banking software sector."
