HP releases 'most power efficient' blade server

HP has today announced two power efficient ProLiant servers aimed at small to midsized businesses.

Quoting research from AMI Partners, HP says that more than 60 per cent of midsize companies will be looking to deploy technology to help with customer relationship management and secure remote access.

To address this market, HP has released the ProLiant BL260c G5 blade server and the DL120 G5, an entry-level rack optimised density line server.

Both offer enhanced CRM configuration options, Linux-based management tools and remote access technology.

These come in the form of Microsoft Dynamix CRM software or Oracle Siebel CRM Professional Edition, HP's Insight Control Environment management tool, and the HP Secure Remote Access software.

HP claims that the BL260c is the most energy efficient blade server in the world, being 20 per cent cheaper and 64 per cent more power efficient than any other blades on the market.

"Through extensive research and customer interaction, HP has gained valuable insight into the needs of midsize business customers," said Urs Renggli, director of worldwide small and midmarket business for HP's Technology Solutions Group. "As a result, we can deliver customised, affordable and effective technology designed specifically for them."

The servers are designed for use with the HP Bladesystem c3000 and c7000 enclosures and are suitable for branch offices and compact remote sites with virtual machine environments.

It's offered with either Intel Xeon 5200 and 5400 series processors, supports up to 24GB of memory, has redundant network connections to maximise uptime and features RAID support.

The DL120 G5 is based on a single dual-core or quad-core Xeon processor, and is backed with 800MHz PC2-6400 memory. It has two PCI Express slots and can be upgraded with HP Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) and Smart Array Controllers and has optional LO100c remote management capability.

Both servers are available immediately, with pricing for the HP ProLiant BL260c G5 starting at £665 and the HP ProLiant DL120 G5 starting at £509.
