Tap and pay with new Nokia phone
By Nicole Kobie,
Nokia's latest 3G handset will allow users to make payments and share data by tapping their phone.
The Nokia 6212 classic has an integrated Near Field Communications (NFC) chip, which lets handsets communicate with other NFC-enabled devices to swap information. For example, two NFC handsets could be tapped together to share data, such as contact details or meeting times.
Alternatively, the phone could be waved against an NFC reader to make direct payments, for ticketing, or to receive music, photos or links.
"With the Nokia 6212 classic, people can swap items like business cards or calendar notes by simply tapping their handsets together. With ever-increasing device functions and services available, ease-of-use is essential. One way to keep things simple is NFC," said Jeremy Belostock, the head of near field communications at Nokia.
Using the phone for payments or for ticketing would require a subscription and the installation of an application, Nokia noted.
The handset will come with a set of its own tags, to let users create their own personalised NFC applications.
Aside from its NFC features, the 3G Nokia 6212 classic offers a two megapixel camera, a music player and two-inch display screen.
It will ship in the third quarter of this year in Europe and Asia, with an expected price of €200 (£160).
