Sun extends open source storage
By Nicole Kobie,
Sun Microsystems has added new developer tools, guides and services to its open source storage platform, in the hopes of making the process easier and faster.
The new developer tools, alongside how-to guides, mean an OpenSolaris-based storage server could be built in less than ten minutes, Sun claimed. The new tools also offer quick and easy ways to develop network attached storage (NAS) systems.
Sun also expanded its services capabilities to help speed up application development and help customers switch to an open storage system. They now offer developers, managed services and other assistance for working with or migrating to the OpenSolaris system.
Sun said it believes opening up storage will lead to better performance and lower prices for customers, as well as spurring innovation.
"The storage industry is undergoing a radical transformation that parallels what servers went through a decade ago," said John Fowler, executive vice president of Systems Group at Sun Microsystems.
The OpenSolaris storage community has three thousand members working on 30 active projects.
The platform is used by other vendors, including Nexenta, which develops NAS software.
"The enterprise shift to open storage solutions is now," said Even Powell, chief executive of Nexenta, adding that the open source system means his firm "is saving customers time and money over legacy storage systems at a time when data is growing faster than legacy solution architectures and our enterprise customers budgets can address".
