Schools get SMS for alerts
By Miya Knights,
The launch of a new, open source mobile plug-in is set to allow education institutions to send out mass message alerts cost-effectively to warn of closures due to bad weather or changes to scheduled events, for instance.
Education sector workers can download the new MoodleMobile plug-in on the website of UK messaging technology company PageOne, which provides 'JANET txt,' a low cost suite of secure SMS-based messaging services for UK education and research network, JANET.
MoodleMobile allows messages to be sent to any existing contact groups, enabling a large number of people to be contacted simultaneously.
Users simply select a message recipient from their existing contact list, enter the message, and click 'send'. Messages can be sent to as many or as few people as required, as well as allowing users to select individual recipients from a list.
"Messaging has grown to be an increasingly effective communication tool amongst schools, colleges and universities," said Chris Jones, PageOne chief executive.
"We are delighted by the response we have received so far from members of the education community and look forward to further developments planned for MoodleMobile over the coming months."
