    External storage boom benefits EMC

Revenue from external disk storage revenue totals £2.2 billion for the first quarter of last year, Gartner has said.

By Ash Dosanjh, 5 Jun 2008 at 16:52

EMC has been the main beneficiary of an upsurge in revenue for the worldwide external controller-based disk storage market (ECB), according to Gartner.

The analyst's report - reflecting hardware only revenue - found that revenue for the ECB market totalled £2.2 billion ($4.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2008, an increase of 10.2 per cent for the same period last year.

EMC took a 24.1 per cent share of the overall market share, according to Gartner, while IBM took 11.3 per cent and HP took 11 per cent.

Following the leaders are Dell with 8.8 per cent, NetApp with 8.3 per cent and Fujitsu Siemens with 5.5 per cent.

Research vice president for Gartner's global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme Robin Burke said the figures showed that the market was in "strong demand".

"A revenue growth of 10.2 per cent worldwide year-on-year indicates that the storage market is still in strong demand. Capacity shipments grew 48.9 per cent year-on-year to 1.1 million terabytes showing the continuing mounting need for additional storage."
