Use the Quick Select tool with Refine Edge control to create a mask.

It's the rocket launch we really want, so we need to make it stand out from a pale background. We can use Photoshop CS3's new Quick Select tool, along with the Refine Edge control panel to create an appropriate mask. Quick Select simplifies making irregular selections, by selecting similar areas of the image as you move the pointer over the picture. Don't move the pointer too quickly, as you'll end up selecting some of the background. It also pays to select sections of the image separately, as that allows you to undo errors without undoing a complete Quick Select operation.
