Motorola has launched a revamped version of its popular MC70 handheld computer for field support professionals.

The MC75 is the latest industrial handheld computer to come out of the company since its acquisition of specialist device maker Symbol in 2006.

At the heart of the unit is a fully-functional Windows Mobile smartphone with a VGA display, but in a tough rubberised casing, with a stump aerial for mobile comms and a range of interfaces and networking options.

In addition to adding HSDPA 3G data capabilities, the MC75 sees the platform move from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6 Professional, and includes a two megapixel camera and the reintroduction of a IRDA infrared port.

“We left IRDA off the MC70 and ended up having to add it back in via an SDIO expansion card for that device, so we’ve built it in this time,” said Andy McBain, senior product manager for EMEA at Motorola. Infrared continues to be used in areas including vending machine servicing.

Other hardware features include integrated GPS receiver, 802.11 a, b and g Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth.

UK pricing ranges from £1,348 ex VAT for the basic model, up to £1,552.
