Dell launches PowerVault MD1120 with 2.5in drives
By Ash Dosanjh,
In a bid to increase performance and storage available in a given rack space, Dell has launched its first storage expansion enclosure using 2.5in drives.
The Dell PowerVault MD1120, is designed with small form factor 2.5-inch disk drives that offer greater data density than the previous used 3.5 drives. Using these drives can also reduce the overall data centre power consumption.
The MD1120 will give customers faster access to sorted data, improve power efficiency through reduced power consumption and higher data centre density through compact packaging.
The disk storage expansion enclosure features 24 small form factor drives that require 70 per cent less space and up to 50 per cent less power than models featuring 3.5-inch drives.
In addition, the PowerVault MD 1120 can provide storage for Dell’s PowerEdge servers and share a common disk drive with select Dell servers.
Head of storage at Dell EMEA Robin Kuepers said that the PowerVault MD1120 was useful for IT companies with growing needs.
“The PowerVault MD 1120 delivers on Dell’s focus to provide data centre solutions that are effective, versatile and, above all, simple to use.”
According to principal analyst at Quocirca Rob Bamforth, this is a step forward for Dell.
“It’s important to recognise space and power efficiency – this is important for disk arrays as well as processing blades in the server room. That said, so too is RAS – reliability, availability and serviceability. This looks like a good step for Dell into tightly packed server room storage needs.”
