Financial IT contractors turn to lying on CVs
By Nicole Kobie,
They’re not the worst in the sector, but IT professionals looking for work in financial services are increasingly lying on their CVs, a study has found.
While financial IT contractors are the lowest ranked liars at just 11.5 per cent, they saw the highest increase from last year – up 92 per cent from six per cent in 2007. The biggest liars in the sector are brokers and insurers; both were at about 19 per cent.
The survey of 3,800 applications by Powerchex ranked computer science students second when it comes to lying on CVs submitted to financial companies. Nearly one in five featured a bit of fibbing, second only to arts and humanities students at 21.8 per cent. Maths students were the most honest, with just six per cent of them fudging the truth.
Overall, 17 per cent of people applying to work in financial services lied at least once on their CV, up from 13 per cent last year. The most common "discrepancies" the study found were in dates of employment (9.5 per cent), and academic or professional qualifications (5.4 per cent).
