OLPC XO computers in sight for Windows XP
By Ash Dosanjh,
Microsoft looks to be set to make good on it's promise to provide a version of its XP operating system to be used on One Laptop Per Child's XO device.
Last year, Microsoft pledged its support for OLPC's XO laptop by offering to work up a version of the Windows operating system for the machine.
According to general manager of marketing and communications for Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Group James Utzschneider’s blog, Microsoft has internally released the Windows XP version they are building for the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XO computer.
The OLPC scheme is aimed at providing XO devices to less fortunate students in developing countries.
In his blog, Utzschneider said: “There seems to be more and more momentum around the idea of getting low cost laptops into the hands of children to transform education, and that is a good thing.
“Windows on the XO looks like it is on track for availability in these types of national educational PC deals in September. We still have no plans to make Windows available for individuals who bought an XO in the Give 1 Get 1 program though.”
