King's College moves to new networks
By Miya Knights,
King’s College London has signed a contract with Thus for new network infrastructure and services to meet its growing academic collaboration and research needs.
The deal, for an undisclosed sum, will provide the university with City Ethernet and Open Fibre network connectivity across its thirteen campus locations including Guy’s, St Thomas’ and Kings College Hospitals.
The networks will offer a more efficient service to researchers and academics, as well as providing better access for professional services staff who manage operational applications and databases.
The network will also carry all administrative applications to support operational inter-site communications.
The university serves 19,700 students, as well as academics, research and operational staff.
As well as supporting current research, teaching and administration requirements including centralised applications, email and internet, the network services will also provide a platform to deliver converged solutions in the future, such as video and voice over internet protocol (VoIP).
Lynne Tucker, chief technology officer at King's College London said: “Our research needs to be supported by an industry leading communication network and Thus’ solution offered everything we required today, with the potential to evolve and grow with the demands the future will bring. This is a significant development in enhancing our capabilities.”
Thus is currently the subject of a takeover attempt by Cable & Wireless.
