    Protecting identity top business priority

Businesses have said that securing personal information will be their biggest priority in the next 12 to 18 months.

Securing personal identity information and regulatory compliance will be the biggest concerns facing business and technology executives in the next year, according to a worldwide survey.

The safeguarding of personal identifiable information (PII) is the biggest major tech issue according to non-profit IT governance organisation ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association), which surveyed 3,100 professionals in 95 countries.

PII is any piece of information which can be used to uniquely identify, contact or locate a single person.

Enterprise-based management and IT governance were the next biggest concerns, followed by information security management.

“The cost of losing or compromising the integrity of personally identifiable information is also leading to a renewed focus on information security,” said Greg Grocholski, chair of the ISACA Assurance Committee.

ISACA said businesses were making increasingly large-scale investments and a growing number of international regulations across all industries.

This had made compliance and safeguarding of identifiable information the top priority and this could only be done if technology was ‘integral’ to the business.

“Compliance efforts are still operating in ‘project’ mode and have not yet been embedded into business processes,” said Anthony Noble, ISACA member and vice president of IT audit at Viacom.

“IT projects still lack alignment with business objectives at many organisations, and as a result, they are unable to realise business benefits.”
