Demand slips for IT pros in UK
By Nicole Kobie,
Demand for IT jobs is slipping in the UK, according to online job advertisement statistics released by Monster.
In the UK, the number of IT jobs advertised online slipped three per cent last month from June, and 12 per cent from July 2007. It fell 23 per cent from this year’s peak demand in February.
This suggests the UK IT market is being hit harder than Europe, as demand for IT jobs across the continent rose slightly last month from June. It was down two per cent from the same time last year.
Telecoms jobs in the UK slipped two per cent in July, and were down 19 per cent compared to the same month last year. Across Europe, job demand in that sector slipped just under two per cent in July, and fell 12 per cent from the same time last year.
“The UK economy continues to slow and the outlook for the rest of 2008 remains gloomy, meaning tougher conditions in the labour market. Given this backdrop, it is not surprising that online recruitment is now moderating, with fewer job offerings than a year ago in areas such as finance, retail and technology,” said Hugo Sellert, head of economic research for Monster Worldwide, in the report.
The Monster stats corroborate a report released by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation last week, which showed that demand for IT professionals was starting to fall.
