Windows 7 details to be released in October

Microsoft launches a new blog to give details of its next operating system.

By Stuart Turton, 15 Aug 2008 at 16:06

Microsoft has confirmed that it will release technical details of Windows 7 at its Professional Developers Conference in October.

"The Professional Developers Conference on 27 October and the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference the following week both represent the first venues where we will provide in-depth technical information about Windows 7," said Windows engineering chief Steven Sinofsky, on the newly-launched Windows 7 blog.

"This blog will provide context over the next two months with regular posts about the behind the scenes development of the release and continue through the release of the product."

Sinofsky went on to admit that the company had been keeping details of the operating system close to its chest, but said the caution was a product of past experience.

"We, as a team, definitely learned some lessons about disclosure and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid.

"Our intent with Windows 7 and the pre-release communication is to make sure that we have a reasonable degree of confidence in what we talk about when we do talk."

This caution means that very little is known about Windows 7, beyond the fact that it will utilise Vista's driver and kernel model, feature multi-touch support and probably appear sometime in 2010.
