    Lenovo reveals ThinkPad X301 laptop

Improved thin-and-light notebook boosts performance and storage options over its predecessor.

By Benny Har-Even, 18 Aug 2008 at 14:08

Lenovo has announced an upgrade for its ThinkPad X300 notebook, dubbed the X301.

The updated notebook will offer a choice of a 64G or 128GB solid state drives (SSD) compared to just the 64GB option of the previous generation.

The laptop now sports an ultra-low voltage (ULV) CPU rather than a mere low-voltage one, and they’ll be a choice between an Intel Core 2 Duo U9300 (1.2GHz) or a faster U9400 running at 1.4GHz. These both feature a 6MB L2 cache and 1,066MHz front-side bus, compared to the X300's 800MHz front-side bus processor, which should provide a good performance boost.

The new model will also now feature a DisplayPort output, an Intel backed royalty-free alternative for HDMI, and the company says that versions with integrated WiMAX and GPS will appear later in the year.

The ThinkPad X301 will cost £1,599 excluding VAT for the base version and will be available in October.

Since its launch, the X300 has been widely acclaimed for being the world’s thinnest fully-featured notebook, in contrast to the Macbook Air, which achieved its ‘world’s thinnest notebook’ tagline by omitting many features such as USB ports, an Ethernet socket and a built-in optical drive.
