    Vodafone raises mobile charges

Lost revenue through greater regulation has forced Vodafone to lift prices for its contract and pay-as-you go customers.

By Ash Dosanjh, 19 Aug 2008 at 13:11

Contract customers with Vodafone will see an increase in their charges come September, it has been announced.

The Newbury-based group currently has over 18 million UK customers. The 40 per cent of Vodafone’s customers who are on contract will now see their minimum call charge rise from 10p to 15p a minute.

Meanwhile, pay-as-you-go customers will see their minimum call charge rise from 12p to 15p a minute.

This will be the first time Vodafone has increased its charges in well over two years, according to a spokesperson from Vodafone, who said that customers now were getting more value for money.

“In May this year we increased the number of minutes and texts customers were getting, as well as including internet into packages. So customers are getting far more value for money than before.”

Vodafone suggested that “regulatory pressures” were a contributing factor for the prices rises.

Operators have been forced to cut international roaming charges by the European Union’s telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding.

Vodafone’s decision follows in the footsteps of O2 and T-Mobile, who both raised their charges last month, although they were only applicable to pay-as-you-go customers.
