AMD launches new triple-core chips
By Benny Har-Even,
AMDhas added three new processors to its range of desktop Phenom processors, with something for the enthusiasts and also at the more energy conscious.
All three are triple-core, which aim to sit in between dual and quad-core solutions in terms of performance and value.
The new AMD Phenom X3 8750 Black Edition, features Clock Multiplier Control, which the company said in a statement is intended for customers, “who want to customise their PC experience”. This refers to the unlocked multiplier on the Black Edition chip, which enables enthusiasts to ‘overclock’ the CPU, by running it at higher frequencies than its default 2.4GHz. The processor is built using 65nm process technology and draws 95 watts.
By contrast the other two new processors only draw 65 watts, a first for AMD’s triple-core technology. The Phenom X3 8450e and Phenom X3 8250e operate at 2.1GHz and 1.9GHz respectively.
The AMD Phenom X3 8750 Black Edition is available now at retail for around £78 excluding VAT while the X3 8450 is going for around £61 excluding VAT.
AMD is Intel’s main competitor, and its Phenom range will be pitted against the larger company’s Core i7 technology, previously codenamed as Nehalem.
