Fujitsu Siemens lines up six-core Primergy server
By Chris Green,
Fujitsu Siemens has today unveiled its Primergy RX600 S4 server, described as its most powerful server so far.
The new server line is one of the first production servers it has produced to make use of Intel’s six-core Xeon MP 7400 Dunnington processors, which are optimised for virtualisation and handling large databases.
“As Intel has introduced new members of the Xeon MP 7000 sequence over the last 18 months, we have seen progressive performance gains with multi-core processors, with the chips in today’s 7400 series delivering up to 56 per cent more power than the Xeon MP 7300 series”, said Jens-Peter Seick, senior vice president of Fujitsu Siemens’ enterprise server business.
Performance measures for the new server range are impressive, with TPC benchmarking revealing that the S4 achieved a throughput of 721.40 tpsE (transactions per second TPC-E) and 459.71 $/tpsE in transaction testing.
The tests were performed using an S4 with four Intel Xeon X5350 (Tigerton, Quad-Core) processors and 128GB of RAM.
“We recognised that large enterprise customers want to take advantage of the very real performance gains from the latest generation of multi-core processors, but are not necessarily ready to throw out their entire database and virtualisation server farms,” said Seick.
The S4 rack server is available immediately and can take four and six core processors with up to 16 MB of additional shared Level 3 cache, as well as up to 256GB of RAM.
