Lenovo enters server market with ThinkServer series
By Nicole Kobie,
Lenovo has made its first move into the server market, with the announcement of its ThinkServer line.
The series is targeted at small and medium businesses (SMB) with no dedicated IT staff. The line-up includes three towers and two rack x86 servers, and uses either Microsoft Windows Server or Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
The TS100 tower server and the RS110 Rack server feature Intel Core 2 Duo or Xeon 3000/3200 processors, and are for smaller businesses with basic applications.
The TD100 and TD100x towers and RD120 rack server feature Intel’s Xeon 3000 or 5000 processors, and are for larger businesses with databases or using virtualisation, Lenovo said.
The family is available from 30 September starting from $749.
Gartner analyst Errol Rasit said the positioning of the servers will help Lenovo compete in the wider x86 single and dual-server market, but said competition across the market would be fierce. “Lenovo’s entrance to the server market will be challenging as it is a highly consolidated and competitive sector. If Lenovo can leverage its PC channel to market effectively, it could be an alternative supplier to European server resellers,” he said.
Rasit added that its association with IBM and its strong brand name from the ThinkPad PC line will help Lenovo. “Lenovo will continue to leverage the PC channel acquired and since developed from IBM to grow its worldwide presence. ThinkServer helps to leverage the brand awareness Lenovo has in its current PC installed base and branded service offerings will help to gain credibility in the server market.”
