Apple patches Mac OS X, causes app trouble
By Asavin Wattanajantra,
Apple has released a massive patch for its Mac OSX operating system, with fixes for over 20 vulnerabilities.
Security Update 2008-007 - which can be downloaded through Software Update or Apple Downloads - fixes a wide range of vulnerabilities with both Mac OSX and third party components.
It is the seventh security update this year for Mac OS X and addresses vulnerabilities which include those in Clam AV, ColorSync, PHP and MySQL Server, which could lead to arbitrary code executions. There are also fixes for multiple vulnerabilities in Apache, which could lead to cross site request forgery, and Tomcat, which could lead to a cross site scripting attack.
Finder also has a problem fixed, where a maliciously crafted file on the Desktop could cause it to continually terminate and restart.
Some users have reported problems with the update. On the Apple Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard discussion board, a forum member called Jimbo 60640 reported that upon rebooting after the update, apps were broken including Mail, Safari and Dashboard.
He said on the board: “This is truly not good! It seems the update affected lots of people, some differently.”
Apple does not disclose, discuss or confirm security issues until a full investigation has occurred.
