Sun claims seven records with new server
By Benny Har-Even,
Sun, the computer server manufacturer, has announced its Sparc Enterprise T5440 server - which it claims set the pace in seven industry standard benchmarks.
The company claimed that the Solaris 10 powered server is an ideal virtualisation platform for consolidation of existing systems and for running enterprise applications such as large scale OLTP databases, CRM and ERP.
Sun claimed the world records are for the SAP ERP application, scoring 7,520 on the SAP SD benchmark, ahead of the 4,010 achieved by the nearest rival, an IBM System p570 Power6.
The server also hits the top spot on Siebel CRM 8.0 PSPP benchmark, the SPECjbb2005 benchmark, a Java-based Enterprise benchmark, and the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark.
The Enterprise T5440 server is housed in a 4RU unit and, according to Sun, it delivers record performance per watt and best performance per rack unit for a Java application server.
Finally, Sun claimed the server is also suitable for High Performance Computing, with world records in this field.
The Enterprise T5440 server consists of four ULtraSPARC T2 Plus processors, offering 32 cores and 256 processing threads.
The processor war involves manufacturers leapfrogging each other in terms of performance and Intel recently released six-core ‘Dunnington’ Xeon processors, claiming that systems based on these chips offered record breaking performance in other areas, such as transactions per minute.
