Office by subscription for £60 a year

Microsoft is to offer its Office suite for an annual subscription.

By Nicole Kobie, 14 Oct 2008 at 16:54

Microsoft is set to deliver its Office suite by subscription in the UK, announcing the Equipt service will be going on sale next week.

Equipt – previously codenamed ‘Albany’ – will let people receive Office Home for an annual subscription fee of £59.99, as well as Student 2007, the OneCare service and a few other bits via subscription for use across up to three computers. All updates and upgrades will be automatically delivered.

The service will be available from 20 October from PC World, but only for individual users – not businesses. At the moment, a bundled package of Office Home and Student 2007 also runs £59.99 on the PC World site.

At the launch of then-Albany earlier this year, Microsoft stressed that this is the same Microsoft Office suite that comes in a box – alongside the OneCare service and Student 2007, of course. The software giant’s chief executive Steve Ballmer did say earlier this month in London that a web-friendly version of Office was in the works.
