Smartphone Show 2008: Samsung's intelligent, connected device vision
By Maggie Holland,
Samsung used the Smartphone Show this week to detail its vision for the future of connected devices.
Embedded biometric sensors could enable real-time healthcare and devices could be capable of monitoring our body temperature and blood pressure, according to Ho-Soo Lee, executive vice president of Samsung’s Mobile Solutions Centre.
And, as well as being capable of these higher-value tasks, the way in which the devices will work will be much more intelligent too.
“[Devices will connect to each other] using the body as a conduit rather than traditional protocols that rely on travelling through the air,” Lee said.
Bearing in mind he was speaking at an event all about smartphones, Lee added: “We see the smartphone as an outcome of a continual convergence of devices that were previously just standalone. Now they’re not only connected but also mobile.... Our leadership in the market stems from a keen awareness of the personal nature of mobile devices.”
Lee added: “As an industry we are only beginning to explore the full range of opportunities provided by advances in connectivity such as the digital living natural alliance of which Samsung is part of.
“I firmly believe Samsung is ideally positioned to be a leader in that emerging space in the future.”
To help developers do what they do best and work towards being part of the creation of this future, Samsung choose the event as a launch pad for its Mobile Innovator website – a place developers can go to to get advice, remote access to devices, market their apps and network among other things.
