Sling TV Portal goes live
By Benny Har-Even,
Slingmedia, manufacturers of the SlingBox streaming device has made its Sling.com media portal public, after a period of closed testing.
A Slingbox is a streaming device that enables business travellers and consumers to access their home TV content over the internet.
The Sling.com site, which is officially still in beta, enables users to watch content directly on the site, but is currently only available inside the US. The content is geo-blocked so users outside of the US are not able to view it.
Sling has signed deals with several content providers, such as Hulu, an NBC-Fox partnership, to offer TV shows, movies, and custom produced web content on the site. Other providers include CBS, PBS and BBC America.
A UK spokesman for Slingmedia told IT PRO that there was no announcement of any equivalent service for UK and European users at this time.
However, Slingbox owners from around the world can make use of the Sling.com website to access content from their own Slingboxes directly from the website. Previously, Slingbox owners could only get to their content using client-based software installed on PCs, laptops and mobile phones.
