    Energy giant networks with C&W

The energy company operating under the British Gas name gets next generation telecoms like Tesco and Thames Water before them.

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 2 Dec 2008 at 11:32

Centrica, the energy company which has the rights to the British Gas name in the UK, has signed a five-year £79 million contract with Cable & Wireless.

British telco Cable & Wireless will exclusively provide next generation telecommunications for Centrica’s UK operations, which has British Gas at its core. It also operates under the 'Scottish Gas' name in Scotland.

Centrica is the market leader of energy supply to UK households, and also owns Direct Energy in the US and Oxxio in the Netherlands. It provides energy to homes and businesses.

The terms of the new contract will mean that the group’s existing systems will move into a single IP network based on next generation platforms which includes voice, data, and other media such as video.

Centrica’s network infrastructure will be consolidated onto Cable & Wireless next generation multi service platform with 61 sites connected and managed services provided to 111 sites in total.

Cable & Wireless has been explicitly enterprise in the last couple of years, with big deals recently completed with Tesco, Aviva and Thames Water.

It has also made moves into the emerging markets with networking giants Cisco.
