TomTom unveils online route planner
By Maggie Holland,
TomTom has this week embarked on a beta test programme to put a new online route planner through its paces.
The new web-based route planner, which is currently free to use, will help business travellers and consumers alike pre-plan journeys with much more information at their disposal, such as real-time traffic flow data and information on historic speed measurements to enable precise travel and arrival times to be calculated.
"The introduction of the online Route Planner marks an important step in our strategy to make our award-winning navigation available for all users, regardless of the platform that is used," said TomTom’s chief executive Harold Goddijn in a statement.
"Users who do not have a navigation device can now also benefit from our high-quality routing before starting their journey, giving them a chance to plan their day more efficiently than ever before."
The new online planner will also incorporate changes made to TomTom’s route maps as part of the company’s Map Share tool.
TomTom completed its purchase of digital map company TeleAtlas earlier this year. TeleAtlas provides the maps used by TomTom's sat nav devices.
