O2 sees green with eco-friendly charger

Mobile giant launches new energy efficient universal mobile charger.

By Maggie Holland, 5 Dec 2008 at 12:04

O2 has given planet earth a Christmas present in the form of an eco-friendly charger that will help mobile fans save money as well as reducing the harmful impact to the environment.

In what it claims is the first such move by a UK operator, the new O2 Universal Charger has the potential to slash energy consumption by up to 70 per cent as well as helping Britons to save more than £30 million a year, according to the mobile giant.

The new charger will come with different leads so it will fit most mobiles and adheres to the strict criteria laid out by the US Energy Star rating guidelines, in addition to boasting a power control system to avoid energy wastage.

“People are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact products are having on the environment and with mobile the single biggest impact is the energy used in charging,” said Ronan Dunne, chief executive of O2 UK.

“The O2 Universal Charger offers customers a simple yet effective way of reducing the environmental impact of their phones and reduces the waste associated with charger disposal.”

The new Universal Charger is available now at a cost of £14.99. O2 is also selling it at an introductory special rate of £7.49 if it’s purchased with an O2 handset between now and the end of the year.
