Will Dell's "Adamo" compete with Macbook Air?

Rumours and speculation about an ultra-thin laptop, thanks to a new teaser website and a Dell executive slip.

By Asavin Wattanajantra, 19 Dec 2008 at 16:44

Dell looks set to reveal a new laptop rival to the MacBook Air, codenamed “Adamo”, at next month’s Consumer Electronic Show (CES).

As well as the creation of a website for the mystery new product, documents uncovered by a New York Times blogger revealed that the “Adamo” trademark covered computer hardware, including laptops and desktops.

Although Dell has made no official statement about Adamo, the New York Times went on to speculate it would be a super-thin and ultra portable rival to the MacBook Air.

The newspaper based this on the fact that Michael Tatelman, Dell’s vice president in charge of consumer sales and marketing, looked stunned and had to look away mouth agape when asked if they had an Air-like product in store.

Dell has been looking to shed its reputation for producing dull products in the last few years, and recently revamped PCs and laptops among most of its brands, including its Inspiron and Latitude lines.

Compete?

No matter what the hardware might look like for the Adamo, it is a huge stretch to call it a competing device. Fact of the matter is, the Adamo will still hobble along on a Windows platform and that alone makes it a loser in this competition.
