Barclays to cut another 400 IT jobs

The bank is slashing jobs which have 'unclear' or duplicated responsibilities.

Barclays will be cutting over 400 IT jobs across the UK, the bank confirmed today, claiming the slashed roles were duplicated or had “unclear” responsibilities.

The cuts will affect 158 permanent staff and 250 contractors in Cheshire and London.

In a statement, Barclays said: “We have identified some aspects of our technology operations where the organisational structure impedes performance, and roles and responsibilities for colleagues are unclear. In some cases, roles are obsolete or being duplicated elsewhere within the bank.“

The bank said none of the roles would be offshored. Last July, Barclays announced plans to offshore 1,800 roles over three years.

Derek Simpson, the head of union Unite, said the cuts would be a “bitter blow to the IT workforce across Barclays.”

"At this time of economic uncertainty staff across the industry are working under immense pressure and there is a great deal of nervousness regarding their job security,” he added in a statement.
