AVG focuses on retail with Maplin partnership
By Asavin Wattanajantra,
Security vendor AVG, known for its massively popular free anti-virus software, has a made a significant move into retail by partnering with high street chain Maplin.
The move signifies a move for AVG from selling products with smaller and independent retailers to the larger high street chains.
Maplin will now offer AVG internet security and anti-virus products through its network of 158 retail stores, mail-order service and e-commerce platform. Graham O’Reilly, AVG sales director for the UK, said: “We have a very strong position working with these partners [when compared to its other rivals], simply because we have all these free version users – 80 million overall worldwide."
O’Reilly said that the vendor was still very much focused its free and downloadable software model, but now had the task of moving into new areas.
He said: “We are now having a focus on retail, and also other areas such as OEMs, ISPs and so forth. It’s off the back of the success that the company has that we’ve been able to take these steps."
He added that retailers and other partners were vital in getting these customers to migrate to AVG’s paid security software, especially if they were using more risky applications such as online banking and social networking.

Make it lighter
AVG used to be a very light user of system resources, but no longer - v 8 is a huge resource hog, slowing systems drastically. If they really want to gain users, they should remedy that - otherwise users are going to be switching to Avast and Avira, which provide equal or better protection without the drag on your system.
