Nokia’s N79 to ship without charger
By Maggie Holland,
Nokia has embarked on a trial that will see it ship some versions of its N79 handset without a charger.
But it’s not just the Finnish mobile giant being stingy – the move has a much nicer ulterior motive as it should encourage mobile fans to use their old charger, enabling it to use less packaging and help stave off more damage to planet earth in the process.
“We understand you don't always need another charger. So, when you buy this Nokia N79 online, it comes without one. All we're asking is that you keep hold of your old Nokia charger, and use it again. It's part of a trial to save energy and reduce waste, so it comes in a smaller box too, and for each one we sell we'll donate £4 to WWF, the global conservation organisation,” the company says on its website.
“Together we can help the environment... Charger not included. Proud to reuse. Tell us what you think of our no-charger trial, and we'll give you a discount code for an online accessory purchase.”
At the time of publication, it’s not known how long the trial will last or whether it’s simply a precursor to a wider initiative that may eventually include other products. We’ll update you as soon as we know more.
