Nokia N97 rumours hint at March ship date
By Benny Har-Even,
Yesterday, online retailer Play.com got smartphone fans all a flurry when it displayed a release date on its site for Nokia's upcoming high-end smartphone, the N97.
The phone was listed, SIM free and unlocked for use on any network, as available for pre-order for £479.99 including VAT with free delivery. Today, however, it has removed the price and instead replaced this with a ‘Coming Soon’ label and a box for interested parties to enter their email address to be notified when the phone is available.
A Nokia spokeswoman would not confirm the suggested release date, stating that the company would not comment on speculation and rumour - but did say the Nokia N97 was scheduled for a first quarter release date.
Nokia’s N97 was announced that the end of 2008 and caused a stir as this year’s Consumer Electronics Show held earlier this month in Las Vegas.
When it is finally released the phone will shoot to the top of Nokia’s smartphone offerings with a 3.5in touch screen display with an impressive 640 x 360 resolution and a slide out keyboard underneath. It will come fully loaded with quad-band GSM, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, an accelerometer, a digital compass and 32MB of internal memory expandable with a MicroSD card.
