    Sun Microsystems slashes 1,300 jobs

Some 1,300 Sun employees have been laid off as part of a long term growth strategy.

By Abby Michaud, 26 Jan 2009 at 17:12

Sun Microsystems has confirmed that layoff notifications were given to 1,300 employees on 22 January.

According to Sun spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek, Sun last year announced the cuts, as part of “a series of changes designed to align its cost model with the global economy and accelerate the introduction of compelling open source innovations.”

A total of 5,000 to 6,000 jobs are to be cut in total - about 15 per cent to 18 per cent of their workforce worldwide - including last week's 1,300 roles.

Lengkeek also stressed that Sun believes the number of layoffs, alongside other cost cutting actions being carried out, will help put the company on the correct track financially.
