Western Digital releases 2TB hard disk
By Benny Har-Even,
Western Digital (WD) has won the race to release the world’s first two terabyte hard disk drive – the largest capacity drive available.
The 3.5in drive spreads its ground-breaking capacity over four platters – with 500GB per platter, which equates to an aerial density of 400Gb/in2. Performance is helped by 32MB of cache.
Despite its monster capacity, the drive sits as part of Western Digital’s eco-friendly range of Caviar Green drives.
The company said that the 2TB disk and its 1.5TB sibling benefit from a number of technologies designed to aid speed and performance. StableTrac reduces system-induced vibrations for more accurate disk-head tracking, while IntelliPower balances the rotational speeds, transfer rates and caching algorithms.
There’s also IntelliSeek, which optimises seek speeds to lower power consumption and NoTouch, designed to ensure the recording head never touches the disk platter, improving data protection.
WD said the drive, model number WD20EADS, will be available later this month for €299 (£277).
