MWC 09: O2 pays users to take part in Litmus test

O2 has started paying customers for their time and feedback by launching an incentive programme for its Litmus developer platform.

By Maggie Holland, 16 Feb 2009 at 10:36

O2 is paying customers to provide feedback on applications hosted on its Litmus developer platform.

Litmus was launched in December last year and already boasts a range communications, multimedia, web-enabled and wireless applications, but only now can customers help shape their future by testing and giving the nod in exchange for cash.

Some 150 applications are already live on O2 Litmus, meaning applications can be tested in days rather than months, according to the mobile giant.

Customers taking part will be able to bid, using Mob4Hire, to test applications, providing an estimate of what they think their time is worth. In addition to getting the application in question for free, testers will also boost their user profile and earn the agreed fee.

“Opening an apps store has become the new mobile vogue. But for O2 it misses something fundamental: the collaboration of customer, developer and the network operator,” said James Parton, head of O2 Litmus, in a statement.

“We are in the unique position to be able to draw on over 19 million customers and offer those with a proven interest in new mobile technologies and a real thirst for new ideas the chance to shape the future of their network by working directly with software developers to provide feedback on mobile applications that have been designed for them… By gaining valuable customer insight and taking on board the good and the bad feedback, O2 is creating, not just another apps store, but a completely consumer-led series of useful applications that will drive Mobile 2.0 into the next generation.”
