Gadgets that will become the focus of the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) research were unveiled last week as part of the Defence Technology Plan.

The MoD announced £2 million in funding for projects such as the ruggedisation of Unmanned Ground Vehicles and shock absorption material for helmets.

It also called for development of new technology such as unmanned aircraft and future protected vehicles – lightweight, but as strong as a tank.

Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, Quentin Davies, said: "It is more vital than ever that we exploit new and emerging technologies because the threats our troops face are always evolving."

"To do this, we need to make the best use of the Defence industrial base, as well as the wealth of ability and expertise found among small businesses, talented individuals and academia."
